The modern industry is facing a transition into the digital space and innovators are often challenged by the trade-off between technological advancement and the preservation of the planet’s resources.
Sustainability is a central point of the UN agenda and the EU policies highlight the need for smarter solutions to achieve the sustainable development goals. Blockchain is still frequently perceived and used as synonymous with Bitcoin rather than a broad group of distributed technologies. Bitcoin’s high energy consumption is almost exclusively inherent to its consensus mechanism, and does not apply to most other blockchain architecture designs. There are already many other consensus mechanisms that have already been developed and keep on evolving. For example, Ethereum uses Proof-of-Stake and its transition from PoW to PoS reduced the total network’s energy consumption by at least 99.95%.
